What Can You Claim?
As the carer you may be entitled to certain state benefits. The main benefit available is the Carer’s Allowance (before April 2003 - invalid care allowance). Because the benefits system is complex and changes frequently, it is always a good idea to get advice from someone who knows the system well.
Finding benefits advice:
- If the person you care for has a care co-ordinator, ask them to put you in touch with local agencies
- Ask if your local social services department has debt and welfare advice officers, specialist benefit workers or welfare rights unit. They will be able to work out your entitlement to benefits and may also help you to fill in the relevant forms
- Contact the local Citizens Advice Bureau. You’ll find their number in the phone book, or ask at your local library or council offices
- Jobcentre Plus will have leaflets and claim forms
- Carers Allowance –The Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) has information for disabled people and their carers:
